Four Mac screen recorders solve four different problems. Capta is a free macOS screen recorder that edits the recording for you and never uploads it. This page says plainly where it wins, where it does not, and which tool fits which job.

Competitor columns summarise each product's public website (screen.studio, loom.com, cleanshot.com) as of September 3, 2026, and are simplified on purpose. Features and prices change; check each product's own page before deciding. Corrections are welcome at gorgekara@gmail.com.
These two are the closest (screen.studio is the official site). Both watch your cursor and add cinematic zooms, smooth the pointer and put the recording on a styled background. The difference is what happens to the parts you did not mean to record. Screen Studio gives you a proper editor to cut them yourself. Capta removes the pauses, speeds up the typing and loading, and places the cuts on the beat of the music before you have looked at the timeline. You can still drag, stretch or delete any zoom, but the edit exists the moment you stop.
Screen Studio is paid and has a richer manual toolkit, including things Capta does not do, such as recording an iPhone screen. Capta is free, has no account, and does its speech transcription and copywriting on-device with Apple's models. If you like arranging a timeline, Screen Studio is the better editor. If you would rather not open one, Capta is built for that.
Loom is a messaging tool that happens to record the screen: you stop, a link exists, the viewer count ticks up. The video lives on Loom's servers, which is what makes the link instant and is also the reason some teams cannot use it for anything under NDA. Loom works on Windows and in the browser, and its free tier limits recording length and count.
Capta is a production tool. It makes the polished demo you put on a landing page or in release notes, and the file never leaves your Mac unless you export it. When you want a link, Share copies the export into your own iCloud Drive and Apple's sharing sheet gives you a view-only URL, so the hosting is yours. If you need viewer analytics or a Windows recorder, Loom is the right pick.
CleanShot X is the best-known Mac screenshot tool, and its annotation, pinning and scrolling capture are excellent. Its screen recording is deliberately simple: capture, trim, export. Capta includes a screenshot studio too, with scrolling capture, arrows, numbered steps, blur and one-click restyling on the same backgrounds as your videos, so for many people it can replace a screenshot tool. But Capta's reason to exist is the video edit. If you record once a month and screenshot every hour, CleanShot X is the better daily driver. If the recording is the point, Capta does the edit CleanShot X leaves to you.
