Capta runs on your Mac and only on your Mac. The app makes no network requests on its own: no analytics, no crash reporting, no accounts. The only exceptions are explicit: choosing Capta → Check for Updates fetches one small version file from capta.cam (builds before 0.9.2 ask capta.idad.fyi, which now forwards to the same file) (and if you turn on "Check for updates weekly" in Settings → General — it's off by default — the same single fetch happens once a week at launch); searching for online music (if you use it) sends your search words to Openverse (openverse.org, the Creative-Commons media search run by WordPress.org) and downloads the track you pick; and sharing a link (if you use it) copies the exported video into your own iCloud Drive, where Apple's sharing sheet makes the link — Capta itself talks to no server for it. Nothing else is ever sent, and nothing happens without you choosing it. This page spells out what that means in practice.
Capta asks macOS for three permissions — plus a fourth, optional one. Each maps to a visible feature:
When Apple Intelligence is enabled on your Mac, Capta can use Apple's on-device models to write video titles and social posts, pick the demo's key moment, and title chapters. These models run on your machine as part of macOS — Capta sends them nothing over the network, and the text your recordings contain never leaves your Mac. Two deliberate limits: the models see the titles of UI elements you clicked and what you said out loud, never the characters you typed; and every AI feature works as a plain, non-AI version (or switches off) when Apple Intelligence is unavailable.
~/Movies/Capta as ordinary folders: the video,
the input-event log, your music track, your narration audio and transcript (if you
narrated), your camera and system-audio tracks (if you turned those on), and your
edit settings. Deleting a recording in the app moves the folder to the Trash.~/Library/Application Support/Capta.Nothing. Screen analysis, beat detection, speech transcription, the Apple Intelligence features, editing, and rendering all execute on your machine. Your recordings, keystrokes, voice, and music go nowhere unless you share the exported video yourself.
Two features hand things to macOS on your instruction. Share copies the exported
video into iCloud Drive › Capta in your own iCloud account and opens Apple's
sharing sheet, whose Copy Link creates a link that anyone can open (view only) — that
upload and that link are iCloud's, under Apple's terms, and you can delete the copy from
iCloud Drive at any time. Mute notifications while recording runs two shortcuts
you created yourself in the Shortcuts app, by name, when a recording starts and stops;
Capta ships no shortcuts and reads none.
capta.cam is a static site hosted on Netlify. Netlify keeps standard server logs (IP address, request time) to operate the service; see Netlify's privacy policy. The site uses Google Analytics to count visits, which sets cookies and shares usage data with Google; see Google's privacy policy. The app itself contains no analytics of any kind.
